Located in Group 4 and Period 7 of the Periodic Table is the first super - heavy element to be created. This is Rutherfordium.
Georgy Flerov |
First discovered in 1964 by a scientist team led by Georgy Flerov at the Russian Joint Institute for Nuclear Research ( JINR ) located at Dubna, first created ( not isolated, since its one of the man - made elements ) successfully by another scientist team led by Albert Ghiorso at the Californian Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory ( LBL ) located at the US.
It was discovered by Georgy Flerov and friends by bombarding Plutonium with Neon, which produced the element Rutherfordium - 259, which only lasts 2.8 seconds. After that, a scientist team led by Albert Ghiorso at the Californian Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory ( LBL ) succesfully created a longer half - life isotopes, which is called Rutherfordium - 257 in 1969.
Albert Ghiorso |
The scientist team led by Albert Ghiorso is said to be the most successful isotopes discovery team.

Chemical Properties :
Almost nothing was discovered about Rutherfordium because of its short half lives, which the maximum ones are just 2.5 hours.
Rutherfordium - 261 |
- 20 isotopes in total : 3 of them are :
Rutherfordium - 259 : Protons : 104

: Neutrons : 163
: Electrons : 104
( Half Life : 2.5 hours )
Physical Properties :
Not much is also known for Rutherfordium because of its short half life. However, this is what is estimated :
- silvery grey
- Melting Point : 2100 degrees Celsius ( 3800 Fahrenheit ) ( predicted )
- Boiling Point : 5500 degrees Celsius (9900 Fahrenheit ) ( predicted )
How Rutherfordium got its name?
Before Ruthenium got its name, it actually got the ' Unknown ' title : Unnilquadium. After that, scientist from Georgy Flerov's team voted to name Rutherfordium from a New Zealand Physicist, Ernest Rutherford, father of Nuclear Physics and Nuclear Chemistry, who first invented Nuclear Fusion.
